Surf in Changing Light
Ocean surf unfolds in broad, overlapping swells that fill the entire frame, with no shore or human figures visible. In the upper register, a cool blue-gray sky is softened by translucent greenish and pink shifts. A distant crest darkens into a turquoise-olive mass, while middle waves gather ochre light and break into foam. The foreground breaker, lit in yellow-green, forms the composition’s densest accent. Quick, multidirectional brushmarks and granular bursts of pale pigment convey water’s movement, weight, and dispersed radiance. Color hinges on the contrast between cool blue shadows and warm golden reflections. For Oleg Yudin, an accomplished book illustrator, this lucid recession of planes lends the seascape a notably narrative clarity, while the absence of a literal event concentrates attention on the changing energy of the water.
Oleg Yudin
A talented artist born in 1960 in Perm. He graduated from the Leningrad Pedagogical Institute, faculty of art and graphics. He worked in criminal investigation, creating composite portraits, and helped solve more than 40 serious crimes. He then illustrated books for major publishers in Russia and Germany, creating over 160 books. Oleg Yudin is a member of the Union of Artists of Russia and a laureate of several prizes, including the Aydin Dogan and Interpresscon awards. He works on illustrations for science fiction and fantasy books, creates comics, and works on designs for television series.
